Dr. Dampier was born and raised in Moultrie, Georgia. Because she knew at a young age that she wanted to attend medical school to become a surgeon, she left high school one year early to pursue her educational goals. While technically a high school senior, Dr. Dampier was also a freshman at the University of Georgia. In June of 1995, Dr. Dampier came home to Moultrie to graduate from high school as the Salutatorian of her class. She returned to the University of Georgia early the following morning to complete her finals making her a college sophomore.
Dr. Dampier graduated from the University of Georgia in March 1998. She spent several months working at Colquitt Regional Medical Center as a nurses' aid while waiting to begin medical school at Mercer University School of Medicine in Macon, Georgia. While in medical school, she served as the MUSM Female Representative to the President’s Advisory Committee for the entire university. Dr. Dampier was also active in the Macon Habitat for Humanity chapter during this time.
In 2002 upon graduating from medical school, Dr. Dampier moved to Jacksonville, Florida to begin her residency in General Surgery. Dr. Dampier completed both her surgical internship and residency at the University of Florida-Shands Jacksonville. While there, Dr. Dampier became highly skilled in general, trauma, and vascular surgery. During her chief resident year, Dr. Dampier also served as the Co-Chair of the Shands-Jacksonville Resident Graduate Medical Executive Committee and was a member of the facility’s Graduate Medical Executive Committee as well. Dr. Dampier also learned many nuances of hospital administration and regulations while serving for three years on the Shands-Jacksonville Performance Improvement Committee. Dr. Dampier graduated from Shands-Jacksonville in June of 2007 as a Board Eligible General Surgeon. She took her written surgical boards in August 2007 and her oral surgical boards in January 2008. Dr. Dampier performed well on both boards and thus became a board certified in General Surgery by the American Board of Surgery on January 2008. Upon completing her surgical residency, Dr. Dampier moved to Las Vegas, Nevada to train in Cosmetic Surgery.
Dr. Dampier served as a Surgical Fellow at the prestigious Smith Plastic Surgery Institute in Las Vegas for one year, where she performed exclusively cosmetic procedures. Dr. Dampier performed over 400 surgical procedures during the course of her fellowship as well as hundreds of minor procedures (i.e. Botox, fillers, lesion removals, scar revisions, vein injections, etc.). Dr. Dampier finished her fellowship on August 12, 2008 as a Board Eligible Cosmetic Surgeon with far more operative experience in cosmetic surgery than her colleagues who trained in academic facilities focusing more on reconstructive and hand procedures. Dr. Dampier plans to take her Cosmetic Surgery Boards as soon as she has performed the requisite 100 private practice procedures and has submitted them to the board for review. While awaiting her opportunity to take the Cosmetic Surgery Boards, Dr. Dampier has become a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery and will be publishing her first cosmetic surgery publication in December 2008.
Dr. Dampier comes from a truly close southern family. Because her grandfather has always been one of her greatest supporters and mentors in life, Dr. Dampier chose to name her surgical office after him. Mr. Leland R. Dampier is now 88 years young and looks forward to seeing his name on the front plaque of the newly built office. Dr. Dampier, as well as her father, grandfather, and siblings all share the initials "L.R.D." and are very pleased to see the family name on a very special family business. Dr. Dampier's father, Leland R. Dampier, Jr. will serve as the President and Controller of her business corporation as well as the Practice Administrator for the medical office.
Dr. Dampier was pleased to add Adam Christopher Sawinski to her family tree three years ago in marriage. Adam has been by her side throughout her entire surgical training and has managed to survive all of the challenges that female surgeons face, not to mention the moves to Las Vegas and Maryville in less than 3 years! Dr. Dampier and Adam look forward to beginning their family in the next several months and to many, many years of true southern living in Shelbyville, Tennessee.
